LazrLyne
Laser Scaling Option
for Mission Manager and VideoRuler
Automatic Close-Range Image Scaling
The LazrLyne
software and hardware package provides precise, instant image scaling for
accurate measurements with the video micrometer feature of C-Map Systems'
Mission Manager and VideoRuler systems. LazrLyne
utilizes a miniature solid state laser diode that projects a bright red vertical
stripe into the video camera field of view, at an angle to the vertical axis of
the video camera. The diode housing easily mounts on most video cameras and is
powered by a low voltage DC power supply or battery.
The angular
orientation of the LazrLyne projection optics results in an
apparent motion of the stripe with respect to camera range. Image scaling is as
easy as freezing a video image and clicking on the laser stripe with the cursor.
The LazrLyne software instantly computes range, scales the image,
and allows the operator to measure areas, distances, and angles anywhere on the
monitor screen. In addition LazrLyne adds an "offset" function to
the micrometer panel to measure the height or depth of three dimensional
features crossed by the laser stripe.
Precise Measurements from Video
The
LazrLyne projection optics are user adjustable. Changing the
beam angle and focus allows for use with a wide range of camera optics and
working distances. LazrLyne requires a bench calibration for
each specific camera and lens to insure maximum accuracy, but once setup
no re-calibration is necessary as long as the physical mounting angle is
not altered. Multiple calibrations are stored in the system for different
setups.
Measurement sensitivity is a function
of the video field of view size, camera distance, and the steepness of the
laser beam angle (a larger angle translates to greater movement of the
stripe as range changes). The greatest scaling sensitivity is achieved
when very close-up with a steep laser inclination angle. Measurement
precision for very close range inspection can be as accurate as two to
three mils. Although the laser stripe is easily visible at distances up
to several feet in normal indoor lighting, precision decreases rapidly as
range increases. A working range of no more than 24" is recommended for
best results.

Height and Depth Offset Measurements
In addition to planar measurements of
area and distance, LazrLyne facilitates accurate measurement
of concave or convex surface features. (For example, the height of a weld
bead or the depth of a corrosion pit.) When the LazrLyne
stripe is positioned over a 3-D feature it will show a visible offset to
the left or right. The operator then simply clicks and drags a measurement
line across the stripe offset to measure the height or depth of the
feature.

Mounting Considerations
Due to the wide variety of camera sizes
and shapes in general use, C-Map Systems does not provide a standard
mounting system for the LazrLyne module. Most users can
construct a simple mounting bracket for their particular application, or
C-Map Systems will design and build a custom mount upon request.
|
Calibration Requirements
The LazrLyne system
requires an accurate "bench calibration" after installation or whenever
physical setup or mounting of the laser module is altered. This type of
calibration is also necessary, whenever camera or lens characteristics
change. A calibration test pattern and step block is included with the
system.

|
Measurement Precision
The degree of accuracy of measurements
is a function of setup parameters, camera and lens characteristics,
physical conditions, and quality of calibration. Measurement values quoted
in this brochure are provided only as typical examples for a properly
mounted and calibrated system. C-Map Systems makes no claims or guarantees
concerning the precision of measurement attainable for any specific
application.
